J & K: Four-Day Eid-ul-Adha Holiday News Update

The Private Schools’ Association of Jammu and Kashmir (PSAJK) has urged the JK Government to announce a four-day holiday from June 6 to 9 on account of Eid-ul-Adha, including the Day of Arafah and the third day of Eid.

In a statement, PSAJK President G N Var said that June 6, the Day of Arafah, witnesses severe traffic congestion in urban and semi-urban areas, making school operations and student movement difficult. He said both school transport and private commuting face disruptions, while attendance remains significantly low.

“On the Day of Arafah, parents and school authorities struggle with pick-ups and drop-offs. Holding regular classes in such conditions is not feasible,” Var said.

He added that schools also record low attendance on the third day of Eid, with many teachers forced to repeat lessons due to poor turnout. “Many families perform Qurbani on the third day, and students remain engaged in religious observances,” he said.

The association appealed to the government, including Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Education Minister Sakeena Itoo, to announce the holiday in advance for better planning and public convenience.

PSAJK said the extended break would support smooth observance of Eid rituals and reduce stress on transportation networks. The association said the measure would also help maintain academic continuity after the holidays.

PSAJK expressed hope that the government would consider the appeal in view of religious observance, student welfare and logistical challenges.
